Heat Recovery
Lumber kilns typically use crossflow air-to-air heat exchangers with painted aluminium. Another variant uses stainless steel cooling coils to extract heat from exhaust air, which is then transferred via water pipes to a heating coil. We manufacture our own efficient crossflow air-to-air heat exchangers in stainless steel, as well as the water-based variant. For the water-based system in channel kilns, we offer stainless steel cooling coils with copper fins. The heat is then transferred via water to a heating coil made of stainless steel with aluminium fins.
For chamber kilns, coils with copper fins on both sides are required.
Many lumber kilns lack heat recovery systems. This is due to the difference between thermal energy (heat) and electrical energy. Sawmills often have their own boiler systems designed to burn bark, making thermal energy much cheaper than electricity. Also, heat recovery in lumber kilns is not as efficient as in ventilation systems for buildings where people reside, such as shopping centers. Even though heat recovery systems for lumber kilns are less efficient, we always recommend installing them and believe most users will see a short payback period.

We specialize in products for wood dryers. Our experience with dryers dates back to the early 1970s, when our parent company, Nibro AB, started its business by assembling wood dryers.
